Alexander John Drysdale (1870–1934) was an American landscape painter born in Marietta, Georgia, and best known for his atmospheric depictions of Louisiana bayous, marshes, and waterways. He studied under Ida C. Haskell in New Orleans and later attended the Art Students League of New York, where he trained with Charles Courtney Curran and Frank Vincent DuMond. Returning to New Orleans in 1903, he established himself as a prominent regional artist and received a gold medal from the Artists Association of New Orleans in 1909. Drysdale developed a distinctive painting technique using oil pigments thinned with kerosene and applied to porous artist board, creating soft, luminous effects reminiscent of watercolor. His landscapes are celebrated for their misty blue and green tones, delicate light, and evocative portrayal of the Louisiana landscape.
