From 1896 to 1915, Alexander Koester lived and worked in Klausen in South Tirol. These years are regarded as his most creative period, during which he developed, amongst other subjects, his famous duck paintings. This work is no exception; according to the catalogue raisonné (no. 624), it is dated to the period up to around 1905.
