Hard boards, leather with black label on spine, some wear and surface scratches, rounded corners, leather creases between spine and boards, the boards are attached [see photos]; 5.1/2" x 8.3/4"; front endpaper is creased at the hinges, pencil inscription on the front endpaper "Bond for ?? due 25th Dec. 1844/ $50+ H.A. Graves ?? Grace & Moseley security,"; ink inscription on the verso of the frontispiece "Lewis E. Harvie to William Old,"; 466 pages present, the last two pages with the final chapter of the Odyssey [Book XXIV] and the back endpaper are missing, foxing, fair/ good condition.

Provenance:

From the library of Lewis Edwin Harvie (1843-1918); he was a physician of Danville, Va. During the Civil War he was a student at Virginia Military Institute, soldier in various units, and federal prisoner. The collection of his papers and memoirs are located at Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Southern Historical Collection.

Alexander Pope (1688-1744), is regarded as one of the greatest English poets, and the foremost poet of the early eighteenth century. He is best known for his satirical and discursive poetry, including "The Dunciad", and "An Essay on Man", as well as for his translation of "Homer". "The Works of Alexander Pope Esq. In Nine Volumes" was published in 1751, and became the primary ultimate edition of Pope's works.
