First edition: [xiii] 108 pages of photographs, title page vignette oval photograph of Sir Bartle Frere laid down, recased with the original full green leather binding, gilt title and decoration on the upper cover and the original back strip laid down, blind decoration on the back cover, the leather is slightly worn along the edge of the front cover, foxing throughout, starting to wear at the front hinge on the first index page of the advertisers, many of the pages are faded, reinforced green cloth hinges, a good copy.
Each page has a photograph and an advertisement on it. Preliminaries include an index to the advertisers.

In the preface Sam Alexander pays tribute to Robert Harris of Port Elizabeth, the photographer he employed, for the skilful and speedy execution of his work. Also to Saul Solomon and Co., the printers who have facilitated in every way in the printing and binding.
Extracted from Africana Notes and News Vol.15 no. 6 pages 219 -252: Robert Harris (fl. 1880-1894) had a studio at Donkin Street, Port Elizabeth, 1880-1890. He exhibited photographs at the Port Elizabeth Exhibition 1885 and the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, London, 1886. From 1891 to 1894 Harris was in partnership with Thomas McKnaught.
