With two old labels to the reverse attributing the work to Alexandre Calame.
The present unsigned work is inscribed "julliet 1836" and is thought to be a study for Calame's painting "Bois de Jussy" (op. cit. no. 59). The dimensions of both works correspond, and there are only very minor differences in the arrangement of the tree branches. Unsigned works in oil on paper are common in the oeuvre of the Swiss landscape painter Alexandre Calame.
