“Dear Mom, I’m smart, / I can count on my ten fingers / I know that the current year is eighteen hundred sixty-three / I know that today is your birthday /…/ I swear to you / that I’ll cry each day / only two or three times /…/ I promise to keep myself busy / with what, alas, one must learn / To play with dolls / only in the morning and at night /…”.
Dumas Fils wrote this poem, which his three-year-old daughter, Colette, recited for her grandmother.
