It was to be directed by director Alexander Korda. Scouts were initiated in Europe, but Korda did not find the financial means to make his project succeed, and sold his rights. Columbia Pictures rejected Welles' project by assigning the rights to the United Artist, who made a film version in 1950 based on a completely different script.
