Barcelona, 5. iii. 1877 – Villanueva y Geltrú (Barcelona) , 23. iii. 1972. painter. The son of a family of artists —including his great-uncle, the romantic poet Manuel de Cabanyes, and his father, Lorenzo de Cabanyes y de Olzinelles, also a painter and translator of Molière—, Alexandre de Cabanyes was born accidentally in Barcelona, but lived a long life devoted to art in the family neoclassical villa on the outskirts of villanueva y geltrú, currently converted into a romanticism interpretation center. A prototypical modernist, he frequented the artistic circle of Sant Lluc in Barcelona and the gatherings of Els Quatre Gats. His first exhibition was in 1900 and in 1901 he moved to Paris, where he spent two years sharing a studio with Xavier Nogués on Boulevard Saint Germain. in 1904 he had his first exhibition in the parés room, about which octavi de romeu —heteronym of eugenio d'ors— said: “cabanyes is now imposing himself in the parés for his powerful artist's temperament, for a refined vision of the things, for the aristocratic delicacy with which he manages to rhyme a sumptuous colorism in wise harmonies”. In 1908 he moved again to Paris and Munich, then an important center of the artistic avant-garde. a great lover of nature, a vital and optimistic man, he stood out as a painter of landscapes, especially seascapes, in the light line of sorolla, although his portraits are also highly appreciable. In 1927 he was commissioned one of the historical-themed ceiling lights for the decoration of the Saló de Sant Jordi in the Palacio de la Generalitat in Barcelona. In 1954 he painted three large murals for the dome of the church in the maritime neighborhood of Villanueva y Geltrú. Basically recognized as a mariner, for his famous beach scenes from a wide perspective with the boats stranded and the sails in the wind, the tones of his palette are always clear and luminous, in the post-impressionist tradition of the Catalan landscape school. He made, in total, about forty individual exhibitions. A favorite son of his hometown, he was part of the board of trustees of the Balaguer Library-Museum and of the Brotherhood of Poblet, the Cistercian monastery whose abbot he was commissioned to paint. In 1972 he was awarded the Alfonso X el Sabio commission. works of ~: portrait of girl in red with chrysanthemums, 1911; two ceiling lights in a semicircle with nudes, 1920; portrait of e. c. ricart, 1920; group family portrait, 1923; the farmhouse from the orchard, 1925; the sailboat, 1925; the landing in Majorca, 1927; marina with two palm trees, 1940; the ascension of núria, 1942; the four seasons, 1950; mural of the annunciation, 1952. bib. : j.
