Alexis Axilette (1860-1931)

After studying at the Angers School of Fine Arts, then at the Paris School of Fine Arts in Gérome’s studio in 1878, Alexis Axilette exhibited in 1884 at the Salon des artistes Français in Paris. The following year he won the Grand Prix de Rome with his painting Themistocles Takes Refuge with Admetus, a historical scene.
Traveling throughout Europe, he was a renowned portrait painter and obtained commissions, notably from members of the Russian court.
In 1897, he executed the ceilings of the Social Museum in Paris.
From 1910, he devoted himself mainly to pastels.
