Alexis-Simon Belle Portrait of a Nobleman
Alexis-Simon Belle
Paris 1674 - 1734
Portrait of a Nobleman
Oil on canvas
145,6 x 113,3 cm ; 57⅜ by 44⅝ in.
Catalogue Note:
A pupil of his father, Jean-Baptiste, and subsequently of François de Troy, Alexis Simon Belle worked primarily, at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, at the court of James II of England, then in exile at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. This, in addition to the sitter’s attire, suggests that this remarkably accomplished portrait may be that of an English gentleman visiting France.
The pose and composition also recall the artist’s Reception Piece at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, the Portrait of Louis II Lerambert (Versailles, Musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon; inv. MV 3518; INV 2484), dated 1704, thereby supporting an early date for the present painting.
Provenance:
Anonymous sale, Hampel, Munich, 27 March 2009, lot 287.
