Provenance:
Mostly known for his group sculptures and monuments of “mannerist elegance” (op. cit. p. 471), Janniot is considered to be the only real follower of French Sculptor Bourdelle. After studying at the École des Beaux Arts under Antoine Injalbert, he won the prize at the Salon des Artistes in 1910. Fifteen years later, he exhibited at the Exposition des Arts décoratifs, with an homage to Jean Goujon. He sculpted L’Apport des territoires d’outre-mer a la mère patrie et à la civilization, which is now at the National Museum of Arts of Africa and Oceania. He also decorated the Maison de la France at the Rockfeller Center in New York.
The present playful work was probably intended as a study.
