"This painterly work is technically accomplished and strongly reminiscent of Chinese propaganda art showing happy, benevolent peasants and soldiers boldly moving into the future and linked in solidarity to support the nation and the national cause. The positive, smiling figures are pushed to the front of the picture plane to support the message that the human contribution was North Vietnam’s most valuable asset in fighting for independence and unification" (Deborah Salter).
