"Monique", sepia drawing by Charles Allan Gilbert, signed in plate and dated 1900, an antique original plate from "A Portfolio of Heads by C. Allan Gilbert" published by Life Publishing Company, Life's Artistic Publications, New York, 1901. [Offset lithographic print.]

In addition to the text part, Gilbert's "Portfolio of Heads" (1901) contained ten "best examples of Mr. Gilbert's refined illustrative work." According to the publisher's add in the 1901' Life magazine, "Each of the sketches is in itself an artistic treasure. Not only are the subjects themselves beautiful, but the reproduction of Mr. Gilbert's pictures and the method of mounting make each one a veritable work of art. Each head is an oval, 8 x 10, carefully printed in tone on tinted , heavy paper , and mounted ready for framing on heavy, neutral board."

This authentic print was mated and framed by the former owner in the 1980s.

Charles Allan Gilbert (1873-1929), better known as C. Allan Gilbert, was a prominent American illustrator. He is especially remembered for a widely published drawing (a memento mori or vanitas) titled All Is Vanity. It is less widely known that Gilbert was an early contributor to animation, and a camouflage artist (or camoufleur) for the U.S. Shipping Board during World War I.

Gilbert chose art as a career after discovering his talent while sketching during a childhood as invalid. Following training at the Art Students League, he went to Paris while his teachers were Constant and Laurens. He returned to the U.S to begin a very successful illustration career, with a special aptitude for the portrayal of beautiful young women. Their portraits were included in several gift books and published as prints and postcards. Among his books and portfolios were "In Beauty's Realm", A Portfolio of Heads, Cameo Heads, Heads in Color, and Women of Fiction. He also illustrated books and famous actresses, including impersonator Olda Nethersole, and Julia Marlow in Barbara Frietchie, and Maude Adams in "The Little Minister". His many magazine appearances included The Ladies' Home Journal, Vogue, Life, Woman's Home Companion, Scribner's Magazine, and Vanity Fair. Gilbert also invented and patented a process of combining animated drawing with live actors for motion pictures.
