Alle de Haas - Brandy bowl (1) - .835 silver

[ translate ]

Very cool, silver brandy bowl from 1901, made by Alle de Haas, who worked in Sneek from 1877 to 1923.

From the second half of the 19th century there was a lot of interest in 17th/18th century silver.
Much could be made by machine. However, there was a group of silversmiths in Friesland (in Sneek) who still worked in a traditional manner and made silver in the 17th/18th century style with the characteristic, age-old ornaments, often for export to England in particular.

Alle de Haas was one of the best artisan silversmiths who made manually driven silver objects.
But in order to sell his silverware better and to compete with cheaper (machine) made silver, he often provided his silver objects with so-called pseudo or fantasy hallmarks, including this object. And at that time there were no books or internet to check authenticity.

This does not detract from the quality of his silverware, which has now also become antique.
He provided his silverware with the official hallmarks (year letter, hallmark and silver content) and his own maker's mark (tiny stamped) , which guaranteed authenticity. In addition, various hallmarks were stocked, which he used frequently.

Silver hallmarks:
Master's mark Alle de Haas, walking lion for 2nd silver content and 4 pseudomarks on the bottom of the bowl.
Inspection room Leeuwarden (Minerva) on the ear.
Year letter R = 1901 on the base.

Dimensions lxwxh = 23 x 12 x 6 cm
Weight: 251 grams
