Alter Picket Candlesticks | Wrought Bronze Germany | 17

[ translate ]

An exceptional pair of wrought bronze, picket candlesticks, depicting man's struggle heavenwards, Germany circa 17th - 18th century. These candlesticks are replicas of the early medieval (9th century) pair housed in St Michael's Cathedral, in Hildesheim Germany, that were created by Bishop Bernward. Perhaps the most satisfactory display of medieval arts and crafts, which may be seen in one city, is at Hildesheim: the special richness of remains of the tenth century is owing to the life and example of bishop, Bernward. The bishop influenced every branch of art, and with so vital an influence, that his city is till this day still full of his works. Like the originals, this pair has been made in three segments. They are highly detailed and wrought magnificently, into a mass of animal and floral forms. their outline has been well retained, and the grace of the shaft and proportions is striking. They depict man's struggle in life as he attempts to make his way to heaven (with the implication that without the help of Christ he is doomed to failure). The underside of the candlestick basins are inscribed, in Latin: LABRUM HOC + BERNWARDUS PRESUL CANDE loosely translated as This is the property of Bishop Berwardus. The base rim is inscribed: O NI FLARE IU BEBAT PU ERU MIS UAM PRIMO HU IU SAI NON ARGENTO E NA MEN UT CERNI SC loosely translated as in the face of nature (due to mans inclinations), man (Adam & Eve) was judged to be insufficient at the first judgment (and salvation, therefore, must come through the savior). The candlesticks are substantial standing approximately 13 inches tall and have a base width of 5 1/2 inches (there is a small height variation). They each weigh approximately 1 1/2 kg. They are in, overall, wonderful condition, and have a fine antique patina (with some verdigris/ green patina forming too). One of the candlesticks is missing its picket. Also mentioned for accuracy, there is a slight wobble to the center of one of them that could easily be tightened should one desire and does not detract from its functionality. They have clearly passed through many loving hands and been well used with traces of old wax still present. These have been made by a truly skilled craftsman using the same methods as the originals. We believe they were likely commissioned by a local church for its alter.
