First and unique edition of this rare work published in Paris and Auch in 1822-3.
Story in epistolary form, signed by a certain Amade, presented as a former deputy war commissioner.
In volume 1 the author sets the historical context and the situation of the Iberian Peninsula before "the Spanish Campaign" of Napoleon I. Volume 2 begins with Napoleon's entry into Spain in November 1808 and ends with the Duke of Wellington's entry into Madrid in 1812.
Here is an extract from the end of volume 1: "Napoleon has just opened a new arena for our curiosity, my dear Sophie. We have reached the moment when his armies are going to invade this Spain of which I have just quickly retraced and the past misfortunes and ancient splendor. I will no longer have the quarrels of obscure Potentates to depict; a more worthy subject presents itself. On the one hand, it is a nation which believes itself offended, sounding the alarm from the summit of the Pyrenees to Pillars of Hercules, calling avengers from all sides; abandoning, to steal into battle, their homes, their domestic occupations; on the other a people of heroes, slaves of glory and duty, giving the signal for battles. . "
