Ambrotype of Boy w/ Flag-embroidered Slippers
The subject of this sixth plate clear-glass ambrotype, a young boy, holds what appears to be a velvet slipper in his lap. Amazingly, this slipper has an American flag embroidered on it! We have seen flags almost everywhere in War-era images but never on shoes. A peek under the mat shows that this young man took his patriotic slipper off for the camera. Just a wonderful example of the patriotic spirit that captured the nation on the eve of Civil War. Image is in great condition with beautiful tinting. Some solarization at the extreme top of the viewable plate, otherwise mint. Housed in half a leatherette case.
