⁂ The first is an anti-slavery work written by the British actress Fanny Kemble who had married the American heir to cotton and tobacco plantations in Georgia. Spending a winter there she wrote this journal which led to their separation and eventual divorce, although she did not publish it until after his death. The second is an anti-American work concerning the development of Canadian trade against the threat of the United States.
