American Carved Mahogany Eagle Clock

[ translate ]

An American mid-19th-century weight-driven shelf clock featuring a mahogany veneered wood case. The case is surmounted by a hand-carved eagle crest and flanked by heavily carved foliate pilasters. The central door is divided into two sections. The upper section houses a painted dial featuring black Roman numeral hour markers, ornate gilt floral and scrollwork spandrels, and a central floral wreath motif. The hands are openwork steel. The lower section of the door contains an eglomise reverse-painted glass tablet depicting Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, surrounded by a light green border. The internal mechanical movement strikes on a single cast iron bell. The wooden backboards show several handwritten inscriptions in graphite and ink. The upper left corner bears a faint mark reading Mar 19, 18 followed by two illegible digits. The upper right corner is inscribed in ink reading Paul Smith 4/70. Two later metal D-ring hanging brackets are attached to the upper corners of the rear case. The clock is accompanied by several accessories: two cylindrical cast iron weights with integrated hooks, a circular pendulum bob, a T-shaped winding crank with a brass handle, a steel door key, and a small glass bottle of clock oil with a red and yellow label reading LA PERLE CLOCK OIL OL42340 MADE IN USA Carlstadt, NJ 07072.
