[American Revolution] Commonwealth of Virginia Loan Office Certificate

Virginia, June 7, 1782. Partially-printed Commonwealth of Virginia Loan Office certificate issued under an act for "calling in and funding the Paper Money of this State", issued to the estate of Groves Harding, acknowledging "the receipt of nine hundred and ninety three pounds twelve shillings Paper Money...for which the said...heirs, executors, administrators or assigns, will be entitled to receive the sum of nineteen shillings and ten pence Specie..." Ornately engraved borsers; numerical annotations in margins; docketing to verso; recto and verso lightly soiled; creasing from old folds. Anderson V-7. Lot includes a small cut engraving.

"State Loan Office certificate, 6 percent interest, authorized November 1781 for the exchange of state bills of credit at 1,000-1" (Hening, Statutes, 10:462-63)

Very rare. According to William G. Anderson's The Price of Liberty: The Public Debt of the American Revolution, this document, "although issued, no survivors uncovered to date." This is the only copy of this certificate that we can locate.
