[American Revolution] Rittenhouse, David Partially-Printed Document, signed

Philadelphia, December 22, 1780. Partially-printed document issued to a Henry Hill, signed by David Rittenhouse, as Pennsylvania State Treasurer, for "the Sum of fifteen pounds in Specie, to be applied to the Purpose of enlisting a Number of Men at Camp, whose Times are near expiring..." Docketed twice on verso. Creasing from original folds; scattered minor edge-wear. Lots includes a small print.

An exceedingly rare document to aid in the reenlistment of soldiers during the American Revolution, and as a previous cataloguer noted, "during a period when virtually no specie was available, the Specie obligation is significant." Signed by renowned early American financier for the founding of our nation, first director of the Mint, as well as a noted astronomer, and inventor, David Rittenhouse (1732-96). A fine example.
