[Samoa: c.1960]. The new American Samoan flag, heavy cotton and man made fibres, 890 x 1500 mm. The flag stencilled "Defiance 1005 Cotton Bunting" at hoist, and consisting of a red edged triangle pointing towards the hoist with a sewn-in design of a bald eagle clutching a uatogi (war club) and a fue (fly whisk), both symbols of a Samoan Chief. Light discoloration.
The new Samoan flag was adopted to replace the US stars and stripes in April 1960. This new design created by a high school student Fareti Sotoa, who won a competition to design the national flag. The design was then sent on to the US Army Institute of Heraldry. Defiance is an name brand used by the Annin flag company, founded in 1830 in New York, incorporated in 1847, and now in New Jersey
