American School, mid 19th century, Portrait of a girl, seated in a landscape, wearing a blue dress and straw hat, with a dog on her lap; oil on canvas, 76.5 x 63.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The tradition of folk art flourished in America in the mid-19th Century, largely practiced by itinerant artists with little formal training. The increasing prospering of the middle classes precipitated a growing demand from rural families to acquire personal keepsakes in painted form, with children becoming the most frequent subjects of such portraits. The composition and the artist’s handling of the present work are particularly reminiscent of works by William Matthew Prior (1806-1873) and Erastus Salisbury Field (1805-1900).
