Solomon Nunes Carvalho (1815-1897) was an American painter, photographer, author and inventor, born to a Sephardic Jewish family in Charleston, South Carolina, and is considered among the first successful Jewish American artists. Most of his daguerreotypes, executed during his Western travels with Fremont, were lost in a fire.
