The purple varieties of the mineral quartz are called amethyst. Like quartz, amethyst consists of silicon dioxide (Si. O2) , but with additional small foreign additions, especially iron (Fe) .

Most of the other properties such as Mohs hardness (7) , density (2. 65 g/cm3) , cleavage (none) and fracture (shell-like) as well as line color (white) and gloss (glass to greasy shine) also correspond to those of quartz.

Amethyst is used exclusively as a gemstone.
