Ammonite Fossil Douvilleiceras mammilatum Early Cretaceous Madagascar The most obvious attribute of this truly colossal specimen is its immense size. This Ammonite of the Douvilleiceras variety is not only some 18 inches (46 cm) in diameter but also weighs an astonishing 31 kilograms (68 pounds). The massive fossil shell has a mottled surface with evidence of patchwork repair and sedimentary fill to be expected with such a mammoth offering. Dating back to the Early Cretaceous, this marine cephalopod once patrolled the ancient oceans of what is today Madagascar. An intermingled mix of earthy tones characterizes this giant fossil, boasting a 'museum' size and unlimited decorative appeal. The textural and uneven surface features a sizable amount of preserved nacre along with major structural "ribbing" and even some remnant complex suture lines. With incredible thickness and one enormous hollow opening at one end, this is one monstrous prehistoric shell. Measurements: 18.11 x 15.00 x 8.50 inches (46.00 x 38.10 x 21.59 cm) HID09710052018 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
