An 18-inch W & T M Bardin terrestrial globe on stand,, English, 1840's

the gored with printed allegorical trophy and inscription To The Rt. Honourable SIR JOSEPH BANKS, BART. K.B, President of the Royal Society This New British Terrestrial Globe Containing all the latest Discoveries and Communications from the most correct and authentic Observations and surveys to the year 1839 by Capt. Cook and more recent Navigators. Engraved by an accurate Drawing by Mr Arrowsmith, geographer. Is respectfully Dedicated by his most obedient servants W & T M Bardin. Manufactured & Sold Wholesale and Retail by S S Edkins Son in Law & Successor to the late T M BARDIN Salisbury Square London, mounted in brass meridian within horizon ring applied with calendar and zodiac printed scales, raised on four turned mahogany legs with stretcher, sold with this is a copy of the restoration carried out in 1991, 26in (66cm) high

William Bardin (fl.1783-98) began making globes in about 1780 in association with Gabriel Wright. Thomas Marriott jointed his father's firm in 1790 in the partnership W & T M Bardin and in about 1798 the globe production was extended to include 18-inch terrestrial and celestial globes. These New British globes were subsequently sold by S S Etkins, T M Bardin's son in law following his death in 1819.

John Arrowsmith (1790-1873) was a cartographer and one of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society.
