An 18th century mother of pearl fan with leaf of painted silk, showing a man seated on a throne, a mother and child kneeling before him, set by water with a sailing ship anchored off the land and large imposing buildings including a castle in the background, the monture carved and pierced with figures to the centre, gilded in bands, shaped head, mounted à l’anglaise, guard approx. 33 cm, see condition report; together with A mid-19th century mother of pearl fan, the monture shaped, carved and gilded, the narrow, lithographed leaf featuring a boating party, in good colour, the sticks elaborately worked with token of love, detailed banding, various flowers and leaves, the verso depicts a large citadel with grand buildings, pheasants approaching the main gate with their wagon of wares, guard approx. 27 cm (Shipping category C)

This fan has previously been framed, probably due to earlier damage. Glue spots on the plain verso where it was secured. The upper guard has lifted at the shoulder, not a break, seemingly the overlap at this point. Lower guard broken but all present. Twenty gorge sticks, three of which are broken. Leaf with issues in the main near the broken sticks. Old restoration evident on the verso. The second fan is extensively damaged and not complete.
