An Amusing Lead-glazed Creamware Model of a Monkey, Late 18th Century
An Amusing Lead-glazed Creamware Model of a Monkey, Late 18th Century
The large model seated on its haunches with a fruit held between its paws, jauntily smoking a pipe, decorated with underglaze washes of blue, green, ochre and manganese, the shaped base with an impressed border, 9 1/2 in. (24.8cm) high
Footnotes:
Provenance
Christie's, 7 June 1994, lot 10
This model is most likely derived from a Dutch Delft prototype and a European origin must be considered. Smaller versions in a similar pose are known in Staffordshire saltglaze and redware dating from the mid-18th century. This large creamware version is related to early Toby Jugs and was probably made in Staffordshire or Yorkshire. A seated creamware monkey with manganese splashes, dating to circa 1780, is probably the closest recorded model to the present lot, from the Cora Ginsburg Collection, sold by Christie's New York, 14 October 1983, lot 59.
