LOT 0055

An Aubusson tapestry Late 17th century

[ translate ]

An Aubusson tapestry
Late 17th century
Designed with shepherds and a female chasing a wolf, one holding his crook as he pursues the beast which has a lamb in its jaws, surrounded by elaborate foliate border on brown ground, woven in wool and silk, 273cm high x 305cm wide

Footnotes:
The Aubusson factories were given a royal charter in 1665 but rose to commercial prominence in the 18th century. The factory certainly competed with the Gobelins and Beauvais factory but was never viewed equally when it came to quality. Pieces like the present lot might have originally been part of a series of tapestries showing a few episodes from an epic tale or metamorphic poem.
