An Ensemble of 13 Greek 20K+ Gold Hair Coils
Ancient Eastern Greece, Geometric period, ca. 8th century BCE. A stunning ensemble of thirteen gold hair rings made from 90% gold (equivalent to 20K+) that exhibit serpentine coiled forms and warm age patina. In ancient Greece, hairstyles were quite elaborate. Long tresses were oftentimes drawn back into a chignon, braided, secured to the head, and adorned with various ornaments - flowers, ribbons, diadems, and gold hair coils like these examples. Some scholars have even reported a practice of sprinkling gold powder upon elaborate coiffures. Clearly, the ancient Greeks adored gold! Size of largest (though all are very similar in size): 1.1" diameter (2.8 cm); total weight: 56.6 grams; gold quality: 90% gold, equivalent to over 20 karat.
