An Imposing Italian Console Table
Rome, early 18th century, elaborately carved hardwood and softwood on cabriole legs, with ornamental and floral motifs and in the shape of rocailles, gilded, cross-shaped stretcher with matching carved decor and mascarons, under the the top at the centre features a carved Mannerist faun’s head, stone top with marble applications (“diaspro di Sicilia”), the latter slightly chipped in places, c. 99 x 182 x 90 cm, some flaking of paint and signs of abrasion, signs of age and use. A typologically similar console table - albeit with a reverse arrangement of the carved heads - can be found in the Palazzo Comunale in Spoleto (PG).
