An Impressive Aubusson Tapestry Depicting The Triumph of Alexander the Great After Charles Le Brun
CIRCA 1700
depicting Alexander the Great entering Babylon after the defeat of Darius III of Persia at the Battle of Issus. Signed or titled on the lower right edge, illegible.
9 feet 3 inches x 23 feet 9 inches.
European Furniture & Decorative Arts
Overall, the tapestry has maintained it's strong appearance, is stable and quite striking. Many of the colors are well preserved but there is consistent slight fading to darker colors, although this is consistent with tapestries of this period due to the dyestuffs. There are many areas of repairs, dry threads and darning, as well as broken wefts throughout. Linen-backed. Please see additional images.
