An Indian carved ivory bed plaque, Kashmir or Orissa, possibly 13th/14th century, of rectangular form, finely carved and pierced with a scene of a couple in amorous embrace framed by canopy, turned columns and balustrade, height 9.4cm. Provenance: from the estate of a West Sussex collector. Note: ivory plaques with erotic themes were probably used to ornament headpieces of royal beds in Orissa and were produced between the 13th and 16th centuries with little stylistic change.
