Of rectangular form and heavy construction, the hinged lid carrying an elaborate lock mechanism working ten independent bolts operated by a key (missing) through a central escutcheon with pivoting cover on the outside, the mechanism covered by rivetted ward-plates each pierced and engraved with a merman and mermaid amid scrollwork involving profile masks, hinged front straps engaging with staples on the lid, interior with side compartment with hinged lockable lid (loose), the sides and front reinforced with wide rivetted cross straps and retaining traces of original painted decoration, the front with pierced dummy keyhole plate, and partly writhen drop handle on each side
