An Italian Gauntlet For The Right Hand
Late 16th/Early 17th Century With Later Additions
Of russet steel blackened on the outside, with pointed boxed cuff with recessed border now with rivetted steel straps roughly chased with foliage, followed by slender rounded borders engraved with foliage and within turned outer edge now covered in brass, the front applied with pierced steel strapwork and central panel pierced and chiselled with symmetrical foliage inhabited by pairs of profile heads and monsters, five upward lapping plates over the back of the hand (finger and thumb-plates missing) articulated on domed fluted copper rivets and now with applied gilt-metal upper borders; a mitten gauntlet in early 16th century style, 19th century; the remains of a brigandine, early 16th century, canvas lined with four rows of overlapping rectangular plates of tinned iron either side of a row of similar graduated plates each with cusped border, and all secured by small flat-headed copper rivets; and a theatrical greave of silvered copper, the front with applied foliate decoration, and with a border of beadwork (3)
