An Italian Neoclassical Painted Center Table
late 18th century
having a rectangular top painted to simulate marble above the frieze carved on each side to show a ribbon tied oval cartouche depicting a maiden in profile issuing floral garlands, raised on square fluted tapering legs ending in acanthus carved feet.
Height 32 x width 53 1/2 x depth 28 1/2 inches.
Overally attractive, sturdy and usable condition. One leg recently repaired; it was loosened and slightly bent (probably from an earlier repair) during shipping. Top with several scratches, paint losses and water marks. Top is not original; the table probably had a marble top once which was replaced with a faux painted top in the early 20th century. Several small age cracks throughout the frieze. One small section of carved ornament missing from one short side of the frieze. Small chips, and scuffs throughout, consistent with age.
