An Italian bronze model of a rearing horse, probably Florentine
An Italian bronze model of a rearing horse, probably Florentine, in the manner of Giambologna, late 17th / early 18th century, naturalistically modelled, his head turned to dexter, atop a later rectangular ebonised wood socle with bronze base
The bronze horse 21cm high, 22cm long; the height overall 24cm
COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
Cf. W.Bode, The Italian Bronze Statuettes of the Renaissance, M.A.S. de Reinis, New York, 1980, Plate CCII. Two distinctly similar models are illustrated, both of unknown whereabouts since 1912 when they were last located, in Berlin. The treatment of the heads, particularly the eyes and the mouth are strikingly similar
Condition Report: The patina is a fairly regular mid to dark brown overall, although it lightens and is mottled beneath the horse's belly.
The bronze is very minorly pitted, knocked and scuffed in places overall, consistent with age.
The tail is separately cast and affixed, and the join line can be seen.
The base is modern.
Overall, the lot is in perfectly good order.
