The original relief of this legendary ancestor of the Estensi upon which this is based, is a Ferrarese lead relief dating to the last quarter of the 15th century. It was gifted by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation to the National Gallery of Art in Washington (acquisition number 1957.14.631), along with many other highly important Italian Renaissance works of art
