An Iznik earthenware tile
Fritware, glazed white, underglaze decoration in two shades of blue, green, with iron red in light relief. With a central palmette motif with five flowerheads surrounded by stiff foliage. Wear to the edges, two restored losses to the glaze. 22.3 cm x 29 cm x 1.7 cm.
Turkey, around 1580.
Tiles with this pattern decorate the Has Oda (the Secret Chamber) in the harem of the Topkapi Palace, which was designed during the reign of Sultan Murad III, between 1574 and 1595. A panel with nine of these tiles was sold at Christie's in London on 12 October 1981 as lot 218 and is now in the Tareq Rajab Museum in Kuwait (Fehérvári 2000, p.314, no. 377). Two further tiles are in the Khalili Collection (Geneva 1995, no. 122) and a fragment in the Sadberk Hanim Museum, Istanbul (see Ara Altun 1991, I.66).
