An Ottoman Trousse
Black Sea Coast, Probably Trabzon, Late 19th Century
Comprising three knives each with single-edged blade (two with some old pitting at the point) decorated along the back on one side with a panel of gold-damascened calligraphy, and on both sides at the forte with a triangular panel of foliage, lightly gilt white-metal grips each embossed with foliage against finely punched grounds, and with beaked pommels en suite, in original wood-lined white-metal scabbard embossed over each side with a mosque above two panels of calligraphy and foliage, monster-head terminal, and gilt-metal locket profusely set with fluted red corals (corallium rubrum) in roped ovals and with imitation turquoise beads (mostly missing)
