An Unusual Chinese Ruby-Back Canton Enamel Saucer Dish

Of round form with gently sloping sides, the centre enamelled in blue with a fierce four-clawed dragon in swirling clouds, the rim with a continuous band of scrolling branches interspersed with prunus, the back rim painted in pink enamel, the centre with a roundel of dragons hidden in the clouds. Period: Qianlong (1736 - 1795). Diameter: 27 cm.

The so-called ‘ruby-back’ is found in the finest porcelain from the Yongzheng period. It is rare to find it in Canton enamel.
