An Unusual Grenadier Officer's Sabre
Late 18th Century
With curved fullered blade bright over half its length and double-edged towards the point (old pitting), etched and gilt against a blued ground over half its length at the forte on one side with a martial trophy and panel of rocailles and foliage, and on the other with a further panel of rocailles and foliage above a crowned 'GR' cypher, the back at the forte stamped 'WARRANTED', regulation ormolu hilt (some wear to gilding) comprising side-guard linked to the D-shaped knuckle-guard by a diagonally scrolled side-bar, the spaces between filled respectively by a flaming grenade and three linked flaming grenades (one broken), a ring for a tassel at the top, lobed rear quillon, cushion-shaped pommel with button, and reeded bone grip, in its original black leather scabbard (old surface damage) with linear engraved ormolu mounts (some wear to gilding), and two rings for suspension
