An early French sculpture of three children in a barrel
The fully round, almost three-dimensional statue carved in limestone. The boys sitting in a tub or barrel. Probably designed as an attribute of Saint Nicholas of Myra. According to the legend, three schoolboys were on their way to study in Athens and requested an innkeeper to give them lodgings for the night. However, the treacherous man killed the boys and pickled them. Thereupon, Nicholas resurrected them. The depiction of Nicholas with three children in a barrel was commonplace during the Middle Ages. Remnants of pigment. Knocked. Damage due to age. Partially restored. Dimensions 36 x 29 x 28 cm.
