[GAME BOARD] The Panorama of London, or A Day's Journey round the Metropolis, An Amusing and Instructive Game. London: John Harris, 1809. 23 x 23 inches (58 x 58 cm); folding board game, engraving with hand-coloring (as published), dissected to twelve sections on original linen. Light toning, spotting and soiling, several small losses to the lower right corner. The original cloth case is not present. Framed. In 1801 John Harris took over the firm of John Newbery, the great London publisher of children's books, purchasing it from Newbery's family. Though many of Newbery's books had been didactic, Harris's publications were designed to amuse their juvenile audience as well as to edify and educate. and some, like the present game, were purely entertaining. The panoramic view of London at the center is surrounded by a whorl of vignettes of London scenes, one of which is Harris's shop at St. Paul's Churchyard.[GAME BOARD] The Panorama of London, or A Day's Journey round the Metropolis, An Amusing and Instructive Game.
