An early Victorian sterling silver snuff box, London 1837 by Charles Rawlings and William Summers
Of rectangular form with rounded corners. The lid with an asymmetrical C scroll cartouche engraved with initials JMcL, otherwise with finely engraved decoration of a rearing stag and two hounds all amidst foliate scrolls and lattice work reserves. The base with a central engraved scene of a classical portico, reserved the same, the sides with engraved foliate scrolls. Gilt interior engraved to the lid with a presentation inscription reading “Presented to Mr J. Mc Laren by Honble Arthur Kinnaird MP as a trifling mark of his friendship and esteem 1837”. Fully marked to base, part-marked to lid and lion passant to external side.

Arthur FitzGerald Kinnaird, 10th Lord Kinnaird (8 July 1814 – 26 April 1887), was a Scottish banker and Liberal politician. Younger son of Charles Kinnaird, 8th Lord Kinnaird (1780-1826), and Lady Olivia Letitia Catherine (1787-1858), daughter of William FitzGerald, 2nd Duke of Leinster (1749-1804). Kinnaird sat as Member of Parliament for Perth from 1837 to 1839 and again from 1852 to 1878.
The J. Mc Laren mentioned in the inscription is potentially John Maclaren Barclay RSA (1811-86), born in Perth on 27th February 1811, to David Barclay, hotelier at the Salutation Hotel and Janet McLaren his wife, he adopted his mother’s surname as his own middle name later in life. He painted Arthur Kinnaird in 1865.
