An early Victorian unmarked gold mounted riding crop, London circa 1840 by Peter Thorn (d. 1847)
The crown of tapering octagonal form with finely engraved decoration to each panel of; a fox’s head, a spaniel, a greyhound, a bridled horses head, a jockey cap and hunting horn, two hounds, a huntsman holding a fox, another hound. The top with an engraved mirror cypher of an E surmounted by a Baron’s coronet encircled in a hunting horn and a jockey cap with a hound below, reserved with foliate scrolls. The upper section of platted ivory bands, with an octagonal gold section between with foliate engraving below, the crop tip wrapped in platted thread. Engraved around the crown base ‘'Thorn, Maker, 185. Regent St'.
Length – 87 cm / 34.5 inches
Thorn, whipmaker to her majesty at this address from around 1838, Thorn was also in partnership with Crowther at this address around 1840. The London Gazette records a "Peter Thorn, late of No 185 Regent Street the country of Middlesex, Whip maker, deceased, (who died on or about the 5th day of 1847)”.
