An important Egyptian bronze figure of Khonsu

[ translate ]

An important Egyptian bronze figure of Khonsu, Late Period, c. 664 - 332 BC, wearing a shoulder length wig with uraeus surmounted by cow's horns and a solar disc and the crescent moon. The features are well-detailed, and the figure stands on a square integral base. H: 7 1/4 in (18.5 cm). Well-preserved with an even brown patina and mounted on a small antique marble base. The identification of Khonsu had been made by Sotheby's for the 1924 sale, as mentioned. We do have some question as to whether this is in fact Khonsu and may possibly be a depiction of a different deity, perhaps Hathor. Ex collection of Colonel Evans, Sussex UK; Ex collection of Lord William Lever, 1st Viscount of Leverhulme (1851-1925) acquired at Sotheby's, June 1924 at the sale of the Colonel Evans collection; Ex collection of Steven Munger, Jr., acquired at Anderson Galleries in February 1926; thence by descent.
