Hand-written paper label to the underside of the lid reads: Osman Ricardo Esq./David Ricardo Esq./Mortimer Ricardo Esq. and Beauchamp Court Papers.
The British political economist, David Ricardo (1772-1823) had three sons, Osman (1795?1881) MP for Worcester 1847?1865; David (1803?1864), MP for Stroud (1832?1833), and Mortimer, who served as an officer in the Life Guards and as a Deputy Lieutenant for Oxfordshire.
