Anasazi Black-on-White Pottery Mug - Mesa Verde Museum

Native American, southwestern Colorado, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) culture, ca. 1200 to 1300 CE. A hand-built pottery mug with a stable base, a piriform body with a tapered neck, a thick rim, and an applied handle joining neck to body. The composition has a white-slipped surface atop which a decorative program of black-painted linear motifs are presented. Size: 3.875" W x 4.1" H (9.8 cm x 10.4 cm).

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962

Condition Report: Repaired from several large pieces, with stabilization material and resurfacing along break lines. Abrasions and nicks to base, rim, and handle, with fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory number written in black ink beneath base.
